Candida Foods to Avoid

Candida (often misspelled Candita) thrives in more acidic environments and where there is an adequate food supply with sugars being their primary food source. You could get really picky here and some lists you find are quite extensive, however,  a rule of thumb would be to avoid sugary and acidic foods.

    candida-food-to-avoid

  • Aged cheeses
  • Alcohol
  • Chocolate
  • Dried and fresh fruits
  • Fermented foods
  • Mushrooms
  • Vinegar
  • Glutenous foods (wheat, rye, oats, barley) including pasta
  • All sugars, honeys and syrups (that includes any ‘ose’, like lactose, sucrose etc)
  • Foods that contain yeast or mold
  • Sweetened yogurt
  • Sweetened Coffee, fruit teas, and soft drinks
  • Condiments that contain sugar and vinegar (ketchup, pickles, steak sauce etc.)
  • Vegetables like beetroot, canned tomatoes, carrots, cucumber skins, potato skins
  • Meats that come from animals fed antibiotics and hormones
  • Processed frozen dinners and quick meals

Candida Foods That Help

Some foods can help slow or inhibit candida growth. Also, foods that strengthen the immune system and promote healthy bacterial growth are generally recommended because overgrowth occurs often after immune systems are compromised and after runs of antibiotics.

  • Delicate Sophie

  • pollyanna

can you eat tomatoes and carrots?
can you have coffee with soy milk?
    can you have soy sauce?

  • admin

Tomatoes, yes . Carrots in moderation washed well and peeled. Unsweetened soy milk is ok. Some say no soy sauce because its made from fermented soy beans but probably some in moderation is ok.

  • Rebecca

This website is so great, ive been struggling with intestinal candida for over a year now and i always see what i cant eat, but no one puts it out there what i can eat!! so this has helped me out alot!!
    thanks a bunch!

  • admin

Glad I could help and I thinks it’s important to know a Candida diet isn’t bland and boring as lots of great spices/herbs are allowed and actually help get rid of Candida. Best of luck Rebecca!

  • Lydia

Is it ok to eat potatoes?

  • admin

Potatoes in moderation are fine, however, you aren’t supposed to eat the skins because the skin can contain Candida cells.

  • jason

can drinking water with fresh lemon juice added help kill or reduce candida?

  • Lydia

    Thanks for the quick reply!

One more question, how about peanut butter?

  • admin

natural peanut butter with no added sugar is fine. :)

  • admin

Hi Jason, fresh lemons actually make the body more alkaline so it can help as Candida thrive in a more acidic environment. There’s a free acid/ alkaline food chart you can get by clicking the banner in the sidebar.

Querria saber si con la candida se puede tomar leche sin lactosa, las que se venden para los que tienen intolerancia a la lactosa(I would like to know if the candida can drink milk without lactose, which are sold to those with lactose intolerance)

  • admin

La leche sin lactosa es aceptable siempre que no ponga un montón de aditivos en ella o si se trataba de vacas que han sido alimentados con hormonas. (lactose free Milk is ok as long as they don’t put a lot of additives in it or if it came from cows that have been fed hormones.)

Hey there…..I don’t know what it is but I always find myself coming back to your site. The information is just so plenty and very helpful in more ways than one. I can see that you have a real passion for this subject and spent a lot of time researching and gaining knowledge to make sure all the information is u to date.

  • camille

Im trying to get rid of my candida, but im still breastfeeding. is it safe for my baby if i start taking the olive leaf and the oregano oil? are there other things i should be aware off?
How do i cook the pumpkin skin? and is it ok to eat raw nuts eventhough they are known to have mold? Thanks for all your great info i love your site

  • admin

Hi Camille, you would have to consult your doctor about taking those herbs, but I would guess them to be fine. The pumpkin would be a green pumpkin, not the orange variety. You can just cut the pumpkin into wedges and roast it skin and all, till tender. I would stay away from the raw nuts as foods with molds should be avoided. I’m glad you found the site useful.

  • DJ

Can I eat baked potatoes, but not the skins?

  • DJ

Also, how do you know if meat is from animals treated with antibiotics and hormones? Does it say when you buy it?

  • admin

Hey DJ. You have to look for meat that is certified organic.

  • admin

Yes, a baked potato not eating the skin is fine.

  • DJ

Brown rice ok? and would it be good to take an oregon grape supplement? I heard that’s good for candida

  • admin

yes, brown rice is great and I’ll research the oregon grape supplement…

  • DJ

What about Ryvita, organic whole grain tortilla chips, rice milk, brown rice cakes, whole buckwheat, and Stevia?

  • admin

Hey DJ, A good rule of thumb is to avoid foods that are high in refined carbs and sugars..the above foods would be classified as low GI accept for the rice milk. If your only having some rice milk on your cereal or a little in your coffee it shouldn’t be an issue. Stevia is a good alternative to sugar..

  • DJ

What about homemade nut milks(e.g Almond, Walnut, sunflower seed, etc.); and organic nut butters? Also heard extra Virgin Coconut oil is beneficial?

  • Andy

Fermented Foods Bad? Raw Lacto fermented foods like saeurkrat and kim chi should be loaded with good flora and zero sugar. This should be good right?

  • admin

Andy, Some sites would say no fermented foods, But I kind of agree with you that they could be beneficial. I think everyone is different and some things could work for some but cause problems for others. I think it’s best to eliminate all “questionable foods” and then gradually start introducing them into the diet and see how things go. Let us know how it goes.

Dj, organic unsweetened nut butters should be fine and as for coconut oil, I’ve written a whole post about that. http://www.candidafood.com/2010/01/coconut-oil-candida-remedy/

  • Jeff

I purchased a product called SweetFiber which has the following ingredients:

Chicory Root, Fiber (Inulin), Luo Han Guo (Fruit Extract), Natural Flavor

Its 0 calories, does this mean its safe for candida and will not feed it?

    http://www.iherb.com/Purpose-Foods-Sweet-Fiber-8-8-oz-250-g/8380?at=0

I use stevia for tea and to made lemonade, but on the rare occasions I drink coffee, stevia just does not cut it.

  • admin

Jeff, that sounds ok, but some people have problems with chicory root so if you have some gas discomfort it’s probably from that, I know its tough but you can drink coffee without any sweetener. It takes a couple weeks to get used to it but soon you’ll be fine with the non-sweet taste. :-)

  • Jeff

In response to your comment about Potatoes being safe occasionally. A lot of things I’ve been reading say potatoes are bad and will feed the candida. Don’t potatoes contain starch which eventually gets converted to sugar by your body? I am trying to be extremely restrictive. Also I really appreciate all your responses.

  • admin

    Hey Jeff-
Everything you eat gets converted to sugar, in fact the body runs on sugar in the form of glucose. It’s really the simple sugars that when eaten create a sugar rich chyme that can feed intestinal Candida colonies. Should you eat potatoes everyday? probably not, but a small portion every week is fine, again, minus the skins. Are there better choices than potatoes? Yes, but some every now and then won’t make a difference, it’s the overall consumption of simple sugars. :-)

  • Mike White

Thank you for such a great site! I was wondering about bananas, as some sites say they are ok, others not. Above, it says no fresh fruits, but would an occasional banana be ok? Thanks, Mike

  • Sara

Can I drink milk? And about the fruit, can I have blackcurrant?

  • admin

@Mike bananas probably should eliminated at first but then can be introduced back in occasionally. Above it doesn’t say no fresh fruit. No more than 10% fruit and this should be low sugar fruit.

@ sara milk is fine and by black current, I assume you mean juice? I would eliminate this as it’s high in sugar. water is best.

  • J.A.M.

Is it totally necessary to do a cleanse first?

  • Cynthia Wood

This has been so helpful!!! It seems so many dieting questions have been answered, I had a general treatment question… Is there any benefit to undergoing acupuncture as a way to help detox from candida?

  • admin

Hey Cynthia, so glad my site has been useful! I haven’t really heard much about acupuncture and Candida, but my advice would be if it helps you to feel better then do it. If you do find that it is really helpful maybe you could share your experience with us under the “share” section of the site?

  • admin

Hi J.A.M. – I assume you’re talking about a colon cleanse? No, it isn’t necessary and I would question whether that would help as Candida does a really good job of clinging to the intestinal wall.

  • Rachel hillman

Are lentils, red kidney beans and chick peas ok?

  • admin

@Rachel- Lentils would be the best as they are very low carb. Kidney Beans and Chic peas contain a fair amount of carbs, but they are complex carbs so in moderation they are fine. Here’s a good list of beans and their net carb amounts. http://www.carbs-information.com/carb-in-legumes/red-beans.htm

  • Amber

I’ve read that you have to cut out caffeine, I was just wondering is coffee OK to drink when dealing with candida.

  • admin

Hi Amber, Some would say no caffeine but I have a little problem with their reasoning, I wrote a whole article about caffeine/coffee and Candida.

  • Rachel

I have read through the replies in search of any mention of salt?

Is salting vegetables (obviously in small quantities) ok for the candida diet?

any advice on this matter is much appreciated. stumbling upon this website has been a Godsend! thank youuuuu.

  • Sam

Hi, I have literally discovered 24 hrs ago that I have CA. Its all a bit overwhelming and I went through all the comments/questions posted which has really made me feel heaps better. I have many questions:
Can I take Marcas Rorhr Spirulina tablets?
I am taking an A Vogel Alkaline powder as well as Amara. What else would you recommend?
CAn one eat wheat free pasta?
I exercise 3 times a week (normally jogging). I am obese and have been told to stop for now. What other excercise would you recommend?
Today was my first full day wheat, sugar etc free. I dont feel great, my tummy feels uncomfortable but not bloated. Is this normal?
    Your response is appreciated.

  • admin

Hi Rachel. I’m so glad you find the site useful and that it’s helping you! Salt is fine in moderation so feel free to use it on your veggies. All the best with your diet. :-)

  • admin

    Hey Sam,
Well, you come to a great place for help. I would find some powdered dry spirulina as it’s best and probably it would be best to adjust your body’s pH through diet instead of a supplement. I’ve talked about quite a bit on the site so just use the site search and take some time to read the material. It’s normal to struggle the first day and probably the next week or two will be a little rough because of the die off symptoms, but hang in there through the rough patch and then things will improve greatly. For exercise try some low impact type. Riding a bike, walking, an elliptical trainer all would be good options. i think you’ll find doing a Candida Diet will also help you to lose weight. All the best on your new way of life Sam! :-)

  • DJ

Are organic brown rice cakes okay? I heard they’re pretty high on the GI index. They have no sugar but I heard that they are broken down like a sugar once eaten. What’s your opinion?

  • admin

@DJ- I would stay away from them for the first 2 months but you could eat them occasionally during the maintenance stage of the Candida diet.

  • DJ

    what about walnuts?

  • DJ

When I started the Candida diet about three months ago, I was just eating chicken, salmon, turkey, and veggies. Drinking only water. That was it. However, my Candida actually went away after like 1.5-2 weeks, so I started to add some foods that I researched and said they were okay. Now my diet for the past 2.5 months has been the same foods above, as well as Ryvita crispbreads(which are yeast free, and gluten free, no sugar), organic brown rice cakes(no salt or sugar), walnuts(soaked and dehydrated), sunflower seeds and that’s about it right now. I’m 19 so I’m trying to get a lot of calories, so I’m eating a lot of these foods. I’m wondering if you think this is a healthy diet? In my opinion it is, but when you research these sites, almost every one has a different opinion on what you should and shouldn’t eat. I find your site to be the most accurate and informative so I’m wondering what you think.

  • admin

Hey DJ, Cool to hear you’ve had success and thanks for the compliments. Walnuts are fine and it sounds like you’ve found a diet that is working for you. If you want more calories you can try using quinoa which I wrote about recently. At this stage you could throw in some fruit a few times a week as well and see how it goes. All the best for continued success. :-)

  • Penny D

Thanks for the advice regarding foods that help to balance your body. The only thing is I don’t eat fish or shellfish, so feel that I am missing out on various good oils! Any suggestions would be greatly received.

  • admin

Thanks for visiting the site Penny, take Omega 3 fish oil capsules. make sure you get ones that have been mercury tested and you can get orderless capsules that prevent fishy burps..lol.. I take at least three a day and in the winter up to six to prevent dry skin.

  • Dee

I would like to know if seafood is allowed. I eat alot of salmon, whitefish, and shellfish.

  • admin

Yes, but just be careful when choosing seafood as some farm raised varieties can be contaminated with toxins and hormones.

  • Jenny

Hello there, I been diagnosed with scalp folliculitis which is linked to high yeast levels. Can the candida diet help me. I ready I have cut down on sugar, sweet fruits in my diet which as helped a lot. I do eat soya yogurt, bake my own no yeast, no sugar wholegrain spelt brown and eat no gluten/wheat. Is this ok?

  • admin

    Hi Jenny,

That sounds like a great start. You may find, however that you might have to use some of the recommended herbs as well as making some other lifestyle changes to find full relief. A good program that outlines everything really well is Yeast infection No More. Have a look. :-)

  • Francesca Groves

Hi, I was just wondering what other fruits are low in sugar other than berries?

  • Heather

I have a 6 yr old daughter suffering from Candida overgrowth. I am so overwhelmed with what to give her to eat. What exactly do I need to pay attention to on the labels while shopping? She is a good veggie eater, but is growing very tired of them everyday! Please help!!

  • admin

Basically anything with refined sugars and flour should be avoided. So this cuts out most processed foods unfortunately. I have listed a lot of foods on the site, so look around or try one of the candida diet programs I recommend as they have done all the work for you. Best wishes for your daughter’s recovery!

  • Diana

    Hi there! Great site!
Is rye bread (organic, no wheat, no sugar, no vegetable oil, no yeast) OK? I find it very hard to avoid all the breads.
Is cow milk OK? I am surprised. You mentioned about it previously.
While on candida diet I experience hair loss and broken nails. I lack some vitamins?
    Thanks a lot.

  • admin

Hi Diana, sorry for the late reply been tied up with a lot of things. Not all bread is bad as long as it’s no yeast and low GI. A lot of Candida diets can be too restrictive I think you should start out pretty strict but then ease up a bit. You have to make sure you’re getting adequate calories, protein, vitamins etc. All the best!
