Body Ecology: Candida Balancing Diet

body-ecology-dietThe Body Ecology Diet, written by Donna Gates and Linda Shatze is a book that teaches readers how micro-organisms are essential to our health and when the flora in our intestines is out of balance many health problems can arise.

The authors believe that many of our health problems from Candidiasis, IBS, and immuno deficiency can be traced to the imbalance of the “body ecology” which is mainly due to our modern lifestyle and the foods we eat which are processed, full of sugar, and preservatives.

Body Ecology Essentials

The authors believe that if suffers make specific dietary changes then improved health will result. The Body Ecology Focuses on three main areas of diet in order to achieve balanced “body ecology”.

  1. Prebiotics and probiotics- Eating foods that promote the growth of healthy bacteria in the gut and eating fermented foods that contain helpful cultures of bacteria such as organic yogurt, kefir, and fermented vegetables. (The use of fermented vegetables contradicts other candida diet recommendations.)
  2. Fats- The dieter is encouraged to switch all fat intake to healthy fats such as olive oil, coconut oil, fish oil, and flax-seed oil.
  3. The elimination of simple sugars and carbohydrates from the diet. Instead the dieter should eat complex carbs such as quinoa, amaranth grain, millet, and buckwheat flour.

The Body Ecology Diet also recommends the use of supplements and adheres to the concept of food combining. The book also contains recipes, menus, and shopping lists to assist the dieter in making the correct food choices.

Summary

Overall, The Body Ecology Diet has some good concepts and advice for those wanting to balance the micro-organism flora in their intestines. However, some of the concepts of the book are contradictory to what other sources say about treating Candida overgrowth.  It’s still important to note that there is no one size fits all when it comes to Candidiasis treatment and some experimentation is involved to find the plan that best works for you.
